When you think about it, driving a car is a convenience that we take for granted today. We asume that we need it to produce income and sustain a certain standard of living. For most Americans, alternative means of transportation are just not in the volcabulary. For immigrants to America, they quickly follow the American customs as they attain the "American Dream". With gasoline, maintenance, and storage costs of owning a car are rapidly increasing, its becoming less convenient to drive one. With gas prices over $4 per gallon, you have to think about how much your destination is worth driving a car.

According to Katie Alvord in her book "Divorce Your Car", "More than a quarter of USA trips are less than one mile and 13% are less than a half mile. That's a multitude of opportunities to walk instead of drive. Because USA drivers take 900 million trips daily by car, their are at least 123 million chances to walk instead of drive everyday in the USA alone.
